“The web can do amazing things but it can’t provide leadership. That has to come from individuals with passion.”
My name is Sarel Esterhuizen. I am a passionate technologist that resides in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa. I find “about me” blurbs frequently unauthentic since people generally will magnify the narratives that they want to present to the world instead of presenting their authentic self.
So authentically, I love building software. Or perhaps a better way of putting it is, I love building great software. Software that solves real world problems in the most efficient, scalable and practical way possible. Sometimes this means that I manage people, other times I architect. Whenever possible it means getting my hands dirty writing code in the trenches with my team. It doesn’t matter what hat I’m required to wear. As long as it involves working with great people busy realizing great value-adding software, I’m happy.
Secretly I have never thought of myself as a natural leader. I am an introvert at heart that draws energy from my thoughts and not from interaction with others. In fact certain types of interactions (typically bureaucratic in nature) substantially drain my energy levels. On the other hand I get immense joy and energy from being able to create environments and opportunities for others to be the best versions of themselves. I measure my success by one question, “Had I not been in a leadership role would I love to work in the tribe/culture that I am helping to create?”.
